Secluded Spot on the Beach [Sunday Evening]

Bridge has a blanket spread out on the sand and takeout cartons from Ching Tai arranged on the blanket. Now all he needs is the person he's set this up *for*.

"Mmph!" is all Bridge has to say in reply to that.

"I promise not to laugh, but I don't promise not to smirk. Is that an acceptable compromise?"

"I can live with that," Bridge says, after taking a moment to actually *swallow* the food in his mouth. And then reaching over to steal another piece from Xander's plate. It's entirely possible he's not going to bother with a plate of his *own*, at this point.

Hey, Xander's all for saving energy. "So about these other, non-dinner plans you had for today..."

"Not happening on the blanket, but that doesn't mean the band's invited," Bridge says, trying not to blush.

Xander snaps his fingers and tries to look sheepish. "Damn. Uh... I may need to call my apartment and ask some people to leave..."

Bridge looks at Xander, startled.

"The band?" Xander prompts him. Not laughing. Much.

"Oh," Bridge says, turning red enough that he's starting to rival one of Conner's shirts. "Eventually I'm gonna get better at kidding and not-kidding," he mumbles sheepishly.

Xander leans forward to kiss him.

You know, one of those really, really not-kidding kisses.

Slightly sweet-and-sour flavored.

"That was not-kidding. For the record."

"...Wow, yeah," Bridge manages finally, and he's now a lot less with the sheepish looking and a lot more with the dorkily happy. "Um. Do that again?"

"That could be arranged, sure."

"I brought cupcakes too," Bridge says, hoping that Xander remembers the rule about cupcakes and winning.

Xander would point out that winning in this situation really doesn't require the addition of cupcakes, but he's too busy scoutinga round for the cupcakes. "You so totally win."

"Wasn't sure if you'd remember that," Bridge says, producing the box from JGOB.

"Not a lot about you that I forgot," Xander answers honestly.

"Really?" Bridge says. The same thing is true for him of course, about Xander, but considering that a lot less time has passed for Bridge, he's of the opinion that it doesn't mean as much.

He hands over a cupcake, not really caring if Xander's finished with dinner or not yet. It's their anniversary, they can eat food out of order if they want to.

Xander takes the cupcake, but he leans over to press a kiss against the corner of Bridge's mouth, first. "Sometimes at the beginning I kind of wished I could," he admits. "Or at least forget how much I missed being with you."

"I think I may've said this before but... those months without you? Things just didn't feel *right*." Bridge says, reaching for Xander's hand and twining their fingers together.

"I had to sort of..." Xander rubs his thumb over the back of Bridge's hand while he tries to pick the right words, wondering if he should ask to borrow that sock. "Put it away in the back of my mind and not look at it very hard, if I was gonna actually have a life, y'know? But I never forgot."

"I understand," Bridge says quietly. And it's not like *he* hadn't tried the having-a-life thing, back when he'd still thought he wouldn't be seeing Xander for another six years.

"Not that I was always all that successful at the not thinking about it part," Xander adds with a short laugh. "See e-mail, comma, barrage of."
